Know your employment rights for 2008, Government urges

As many people make New Year resolutions centred on their career, the Government is urging UK workers to make sure they receive the benefits they are entitled to in 2008.

With lots of workers preparing to seek alternative employment this year, Employment Relations Minister Pat McFadden has warned job-seekers to be aware of their employment rights, following changes introduced in 2007 and forthcoming reforms scheduled for 2008.

‘We want to make sure that workers know what rights they have when applying for a new job, or so they can check their existing conditions are up to scratch,’ she said.

Recent legislative changes of interest to UK employees include the National Minimum Wage, which now stands at £5.52 an hour for those aged 22 and over, £4.60 for 18-21 year olds and £3.40 for 16-17 year olds.

The annual holiday entitlement is currently 24 days, and will rise to 28 days in 2009.

Meanwhile, new parents are being encouraged to remain aware of the extra pay and leave now available to them.

Mothers may now take nine months Statutory Maternity Pay and are able to return to work for ‘keeping in touch days,’ without suffering a reduction in their pay or leave entitlement.

And from April 2008, agency workers will be permitted to withdraw from services provided by their agency, such as accommodation or transport without incurring a loss in pay or benefits, provided that notice is given.
